One of the most important aspects of building (and optimizing) a website is testing for usability. One of the ways that marketers conduct these studies is through Usability Testing. Usability Testing is a systemic way of observing study participants in a controlled setting. Observing how potential users interact with your website is invaluable. The goal is to identify any usability problems, collect feedback and measure participants satisfaction of the website.

What happens during a Usability Testing session?

Usability Sessions are typically done in person, 1 on 1 between the moderator and the participant. In these sessions, the participant is asked to perform specific tasks (i.e. "how would you place an order on the website"). During the session, the moderator watches, listens and take notes. Typically testing 5 users is enough to make sound decisions on website improvements.

Usability testing can help answer questions such as:

  • Can a user complete a specific action on the website?
How does the user navigate the website?
Where does the user get stuck?
Does the user understand your website terminology?

Does your website need Usability Testing?

When you’re involved with your website day to day, it becomes difficult to see things from an outsider’s perspective. What you may consider to be a straightforward or an easy action to you, may be confusing for your website user. Usability testing can help you make small changes that can make a big difference in sales or conversions. You may also learn different terminology that the customers may user (that you may want to incorporate into the site) and other invaluable tips to improve your business.
